“Get ready for the spin” warn Oldham Liberal Democrats
Oldham Liberal Democrat Leader councillor Howard Sykes MBE has warned residents across Oldham Borough to prepare for a “wave of spin” from Council Bosses over the next week as local elections loom.
Sykes, who represents Shaw ward, criticised the Council for rushing to publish a number of “last minute propaganda pieces” or so called “good news stories” using official Council channels before the election regulations kick in on Monday 30th March. After that time, the Council will no longer be able to use its communications resources to promote the work of the ruling Labour and Independent backed administration until the elections are over on 7 May.
Councillor Sykes said, “It’s remarkable how much spin the Council has got lined up this week. There’s an award ceremony for various groups in the districts in a beauty contest for funding they have had to bid for. There’s the official opening of the new Market Hall replacing Tommyfield. Next, the Leader will be resurrecting her pet project with Eton College. But I bet we do not get told an opening date for the Coliseum Theatre or why the Town Square car park is still not open. The timing is very interesting. Right before the local elections begin properly.”
The Liberal Democrat boss warned residents “not to be fooled and I am sure most citizens will see it for what it is.”
Councillor Sykes said: “Get ready for the wave of spin from Labour and their so-called Independent backers but don’t be fooled. Flashy PR campaigns and vanity projects can’t hide the mess Labour have made of Oldham Borough.”
