Oldham Liberal Democrats have called on the Labour Government to reverse “damaging” tax hikes on businesses to help reverse rising unemployment rates.

Liberal Democrat Group Leader councillor Howard Sykes MBE said, “Increases to employers National Insurance contributions and business rates are making it hard for business owners to hire.  These damaging taxes need to be reversed.”

Latest unemployment figures that show unemployment rose to 5.1% in October, meanwhile Oldham was revealed as the second hardest area to find a job in the North West following research undertaken by the website Virtual HQ.

Councillor Sykes said, “In recent years we’ve the loss of the Yodel site in Shaw and the Council is not placing priority on closing the gap in our education offer for entry level and vocational courses. Locally we need to do more to attract high quality jobs to Oldham Borough, but these anti-business tax hikes won’t help us.”
