Liberal Democrats to call for crackdown on “scourge” of offroad bikes, e- bikes and e-scooters
Oldham’s Liberal Democrats will put forward a vote on a plan to tackle the “scourge” of off-road bikes, e-bikes and e-scooters across Oldham Borough. The party’s proposal calls on Oldham Council to launch a campaign against the illegal use of the vehicles.
Whilst there are trial schemes for e-bikes and e-scooters operating in Greater Manchester it is illegal for some vehicles and those not in trial schemes to be used on public highways and in public spaces.
Crompton councillor, Diane Williamson – who will put forward the plan – said, “These vehicles can be dangerous. You can’t always hear them coming and sadly they get utilised for all kinds of crime and anti-social behaviour. Residents have had enough. They want the Council and police to crack down on these bikes and scooters.”
The Liberal Democrats argue that too little has been done to prioritise the issue, despite the rising number of complaints received by councillors from members of the public.
Saddleworth West and Lees councillor Alicia Marland – who will second the motion – said, “There is a myth doing the rounds that the police are powerless to act on these nuisance vehicles. It’s just not true. Greater Manchester Police has a dedicated team of specially trained officers to target this problem. Our motion is about demanding more action in Oldham Borough in partnership with the police.”
