Liberal Democrats welcome government U-turn on “cruel” two-child benefit cap

The Government’s decision to scrap the two-child benefit cap has been welcomed by Oldham Liberal Democrats.

Leader of Oldham Liberal Democrats councillor Howard Sykes MBE, “It is excellent news that the government has finally scrapped the “cruel” two child benefit cap.  Thousands of families in Oldham will benefit from this decision.

“Scrapping the two-child benefit tax was in our Liberal Democrat manifesto and locally, we have campaigned to scrap the cap.  So, we are delighted that the government has finally listened to pressure and done the right thing for children in Oldham and across the country.”

The cap on benefits for third children will be lifted from April 2026.
