Oldham Council urged to bid for government electric vehicle charging cash
Oldham Council is being urged to bid on new government cash being made available to fund electric vehicle charging gullies ahead of the ban on new petrol cars in 2030.
Electric charging gullies are cable trays that are sunk into pavements to allow charging cables to reach parked cars without impeding pedestrians. They are designed to offer a charging option for electric vehicle owners who live on terraced streets. Currently, 40 councils across the country have adopted a charging gully rollout scheme.
Liberal Democrat Group Leader councillor Howard Sykes MBE is calling for Oldham Council to follow suit by bidding on the new government cash.
Councillor Sykes said, “If we’re really going to get people to switch to electric vehicles, we need to make charging options available everywhere. Including for the many Oldham Borough residents who don’t have a driveway. We should have been doing this years ago, but this new government cash is better late than never.”
“I am calling for Oldham Council to bid for a share of the £25 million and follow other councils with a charging gully scheme that prioritises terraced streets.”
